The Chabad Shluchim of Park Slope & the Founders of the Rabbinical Committee of Brownstone Brooklyn

The Chabad Shluchim of Park Slope

Rabbi Shimon and Sarah Hecht moved to Park Slope in 1987 with 2 small children as emissaries of the Lubavitcher Rebbe to serve the Brownstone-Brooklyn area and to serve as the Rabbi of Congregation B'nai Jacob. Under Rabbi Hecht's leadership, in the past 25 years Orthodox Judaism in Park Slope and its surrounding community areas of Brownstone Brooklyn have boomed. Congregation B'nai Jacob began in a basement of a Conservative synagogue and has now grown to its own beautiful building, located at 401 9th Street and serves a flourishing membership of over 150 people.

Park Slope has an eruv surrounding the neighborhood, has just completed building its own Women's and Men's Mikvah. Rabbi Shimon and his wife opened and direct the only Jewish preschool in the area, Chai Tots Preschool. Chai Tots Preschool has now grown to three locations, one in Park Slope, Prospect Heights and Windsor Terrace, in order to help serve the growing demand for a Jewish education. Chai Tots also runs a six-week day camp in the summer.

Chabad of Park Slope runs a thriving Hebrew School serving children from ages 4-13, a senior citizen program that brings joy and happiness to the elderly during the holiday seasons, children and youth clubs including Chai Five, Bat Mitzvah Club, Shabbat and holiday programs, and many other exciting events. Chabad, together with Congregation Bnai Jacob also offer a Jewish Women's Circle, adult programs, daily classes, shabbatons and other holiday events.

Rabbi Shimon also serves as the chaplain of Methodist Hospital, is a board member of National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education, and co-directs the Rabbinical Committee of Brownstone Brooklyn. Sarah Hecht is also the director of a popular overnight summer camp for teen girls in the Catskill Mountains of NY, a branch of Camp Emunah.
